The solution, when it comes, is clever enough but not a profound satisfaction. It isnвЂ™t exactly a police procedural either, though one strand of the story follows an Inspector McCluskyвЂ™s attempt to solve the riddle of why Williams shot Green.

Lee posits the relationship with Tilden as tinged with romance, вЂњthe timings of their wants never coinciding, their terrors see-sawing too, one manвЂ™s fear up when the otherвЂ™s had abated.вЂќ The novel charts his affections from a boyhood incident to his close friendship with Samuel Tilden, the governor of New York and presidential candidate. He explores the loneliness behind that itch, and how even successfully reinventing oneself might not scratch what really needs to be scratched.ДЇor Green, a good part of that loneliness, in LeeвЂ™s vision of him, was living in the closet. вЂњHe had begun to feel the first stirrings of it,вЂќ he writes of Green as a teenager, вЂњthe longing to transform himself into someone new, that special American itch for the future.вЂќ But Lee is ultimately more interested in showing how Green didnвЂ™t change despite his accomplishments. One conventional way for a novelist to recreate such an unlikely arc would be to make it soar - a young, insecure farm boy transformed into a city-building titan.

At one point later in life, Green remembers the New York he found when he first arrived, вЂњa city confined below 14th, one you could get your whole imagination around.вЂќ He ended up, among his other achievements, uniting Manhattan with its neighboring boroughs to form the city as we know it today (a move that critics at the time called the вЂњGreat MistakeвЂќ). Or at least, his name faintly echoes rather than resounds, despite the fact that he was an integral force behind the creation of Central Park, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the American Museum of Natural History and the New York Public Library, among other postcard destinations in the city. One presumable motivation behind Jonathan LeeвЂ™s fourth novel, вЂњThe Great Mistake,вЂќ is that Green has not been remembered. In the days after his death, this newspaper published an article in which it was written: вЂњHis name had been associated with some of the most creditable enterprises ever devised for the benefit of the city.
